Eligibility for HUBZone Certification
1. Running the business within the appropriate HUBZone: The business has to be based in a designated HUBZone these are areas which have low economic activity and employment SBA provides an online map to assist businesses in determining if their location qualifies as a HUBZone.
2. Small business entity: The business has to be a small business under SBA size standards. This is usually by employment or average annual revenue depending on industry.
3. Ownership: The business must be owned by U.S. citizens and the ownership must be controlled by those owners. The business must be managed and operated by individuals who live within the HUBZone or have employees living in the area.
4. Employee Residency: At least 35% of the business’s employees must live in a HUBZone. This requirement is to ensure that the program benefits people living in economically distressed areas.
5. Good character: The contractor and their business must have a clean standing. Owning a significant amount of money to the government, or having a history of fraudulent activity can prevent someone from getting the HUBZone certification.
